Manchester United has been going through a lot of problems, especially in the defensive front throughout the current season. Defenders like Chris Smalling and Phil Jones has been in and out of the side with injuries, and are currently not featuring on the pitch for the Red Devils. Recently, Argentine defender Marcos Rojo has joined the same long list, leaving Jose Mourinho looking for reinforcements for the next season with immediate effects.
The name on the top of current Red Devils boss Mourinho’s target list is that of the French defender Rafael Varane. Currently sustaining an injury, the influential Frenchman has been a mainstay in the defence for Spanish giants Real Madrid. His chemistry in the heart of the defence with Los Blancos teammates Sergio Ramos and Pepe has been mercurial throughout the season. In fact, his absence in the backline has been a prime cause for their current dismal performance in defence.
Jose Mourinho, the current Manchester United boss has been a very influential person in building the career of the young French star when he was in charge at Santiago Bernabeu. In fact, the Portuguese mastermind’s benevolent guidance has helped in shaping the mercurial defender’s career to a great extent.
Varane has a towering presence at the back and can become a menace in the opposition defence from set piece situations such as corners and free kicks. His ability to win aerial duels, playing passes to build up moves in the midfield and block shots from the opposition strikers has made him one of the prime targets for a number of big name clubs including Manchester United.
With Real Madrid moving in for Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, there is a possibility that a swap between the two teams involving De Gea and Varane might happen. However, the Galacticos are reportedly in no mood to sell their prized defender, who is considered to be indispensable for Zinedine Zidane’s line-up subject to his recovery from injury.
Manchester United’s season has gone from bad to worse of late, at least in the defensive sphere. Apart from injured defenders like Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, who was brought in from Spanish side Villareal at the start of the season, has failed to show signs of improvement throughout his current tenure at Old Trafford. Daley Blind, the makeshift option as a defender, has also failed to make a mark under the reign of current manager Jose Mourinho.
