Bayern Munich capped off their terrible week against Mainz on Saturday. After being eliminated by defending champions Real Madrid in the Champions League, the German champs failed to register a win against the lowly Mainz.
The visitors took the early lead through Bojan Krkic, it was the first goal for the former Stoke player after arriving in the Bundesliga.
Arjen Robben shortly equalised through an assist by Franck Ribery but Joshua Kimmich’s error awarded Mainz with a penalty which Daniel Brosinks successfully converted.
In the final phase of the game, Thiago Alcantara restored parity but the home side wasn’t good enough to make a solid comeback against the 05-ers. Here are the player ratings from their disappointing performance versus the carnival club.
Sven Ulreich(8/10): Filled the shoes of Manuel Neuer incredibly well as he made one great save to deny Mainz from scoring their second goal during the first half. Shortly afterwards Robben equalised. He also went into a melee which caused some damage to his muscles but did well to manage a clean sheet in the second half.
Rafinha(7/10): Surely not a great performance by Rafinha in the right of the Bayern defence. The Brazilian couldn’t calm his temper and deservedly got his first yellow card of the season for a harsh tackle on Bojan. His involvement, however, gave captain Philip Lahm an all important rest just before the big semi-final clash against Borussia Dortmund.
Mats Hummels(7.5/10): Once again a turbulent display from Mats Hummels, as the former Dortmund defender went through the pain barrier to complete an excellent defensive performance versus Mainz.
David Alaba(NA): Had to be replaced after catching a knee problem just after Bayern’s equaliser. The Austrian is now seriously doubtful for the big clash in midweek against Borussia Dortmund.
Arturo Vidal(6.5/10): His rusty form continues, after getting a red card against Madrid in midweek, the combative Chilean midfielder gave away the ball to lurking Bojan, who didn’t need a second invitation to put home Mainz’s opener.
Thiago Alcantara(8.5/10): Showed his usual set of skills to carve out a chance for himself and also scored his fifth Bundesliga goal in the second half. Even though, he was incredibly quiet in the first half.
Arjen Robben(9/10): He was so good that Mainz had to double mark him thanks to amazing display on the day. The Dutchman was easily Bayern’s best player throughout the game, packing some punch on the flanks. A typical left-footed finish left keeper Jannik Huth completely helpless in the Mainz goal.
Thomas Muller(8.5/10): He was given the captain’s armband for the first time due to the absence of Philip Lahm and Manuel Neuer. The German International didn’t disappoint either, as he was responsible for most of Bayern’s chance creation in the final third. Also started the initial counter-attack which led to the equaliser.
Franck Ribery(7.5/10): With Carlo Ancelotti having the Dortmund game in mind, Ribery had to be subbed off in which was a fairly quiet day for the Frenchman.
Robert Lewandowski(7/10): It’s really surprising to see Robert Lewandowski failing to score against Mainz considering the incredible record he has. However, Mainz probably knew that as well, as he was double marked for the entire game and the Polish international couldn’t even have a slightest of sniffs at the goal.
Subs
Joshua Kimmich(7/10): Replaced the injured David Alaba within the first quarter of the hour but the 21-year-old looked extremely shaky and devoid of confidence in the Bayern backline.
Kingsley Coman(7/10): The Frenchman once again failed to impress his boss Carlo Ancelotti after coming in for Franck Ribery in the second half. He was full of pace and energy on the flanks but had so little end product to go with it.
Xabi Alonso(7.5/10): The midfield needed to solidify especially after Vidal’s horror show and that’s just what Alonso did after coming on for the Chilean just after the hour mark.
