It was an emotional evening, as Borussia Dortmund stood strong yet failed to halt high-flying Monaco’s run. The German champions did perform well especially after a terror attack which caused wrist damage to defender Marc Bartra but Monaco’s quality going forward was just too much for the Black and Yellows. Mbappe’s two goals were costly for the home side, who were lacklustre at the back. Here are the best and the worst rated Borussia Dortmund players in their defeat to the French outfit.
Roman Burki(7/10): His shirt read “Marc Bartra” when he was wearing his training kits just before the game. After conceding four goals to Bayern, there wasn’t much the Swiss goalkeeper could do for the three goals from Monaco.
Lukasz Piszczek(6.5/10): The big mistake from Lukasz Piszczek will remain the focal point in the second half. His undercooked pass was intercepted by Mbappe who calmly finished to give his side a 2 away goal cushion.
Sokratis(7/10): A very usual game for Sokratis in defence. Although he couldn’t do much to stop the threat of Mbappe, the Greek centre-back was arguably Dortmund’s best centre back of the night.
Sven Bender(6.5/10): Made a comeback into the starting lineup after a long time. However, the defender was absolutely horrible and struggled a lot to keep out the likes of Falcao and co. Ended up giving away a poor own goal to deepen Dortmund’s woes in the first half.
Matthias Ginter(7/10): Started the game as the right wing back but had to be shifted to left centre back due to some problems with his pace and agility. Didn’t have a good game either.
Marcel Schmelzer(6.5/10); After a tiring match against the Bavarians, Schmelzer was also slow to keep up with the Monaco wingers. Gave up a lot of space in the left flank where the opposition took full advantage.
Julian Weigl(7.5/10): Was basically singled out in the first half due to the lack of a particular ball carrier in the middle. However, he did manage to suit himself when Nuri Sahin was subbed on after the restart.
Shinji Kagawa(8.5/10): Kagawa was once again one of Dortmund’s best players even against a strong Monaco side. He managed to show off his skills on the ball to completely bamboozle the opposition defence. One goal and one assist capped off his brilliant performance on the night.
Raphael Guerreiro(7/10): It was one of those rare occasions where the Portuguese failed to impose himself on the pitch. He was sometimes guilty of being too passive and mostly struggled to breach the opposition defence.
Ousmane Dembele(7/10): Another disappointing evening for the French wonderkid. Dembele failed to showcase his brilliance as he was often outnumbered by the Monaco defenders and overall, it affected Dortmund’s attacking prowess.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang(8/10): Even though the Gabonese International didn’t get on the scoresheet, Aubameyang showcased his team ethic as he initiated Dortmund’s first goal with a clever backheel. Was also a willing runner throughout the game.
Subs
Nuri Sahin(8/10): His composure helped Dortmund a lot in the second half in terms of their possessional play. Too bad he wasn’t introduced right from the start.
Christian Pulisic(8/10): Was basically unstoppable right after coming on as a sub. The American left Raggi in no trail. However, he did become to get a bit frustrated later on, as most of his crosses were getting snuffed out by the defenders.
