The second injury for Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane has undone a familiar wound for the North London club at a very crucial time of the season. And although Spurs haven’t faced any major setbacks in their title challenge in the last stages of the season, thanks to Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, Pochettino has clearly felt the huge void Kane leaves the team with his absence.
Numerous attempts by the Argentine manager to find a potent backup for the English star have failed in the past with Vincent Janssen being the latest example. The Dutch international arrived at White Hart Lane last summer at the back of a price of £20million from AZ Alkmaar and could manage only one goal in 23 league appearances.
And if not for the terrific winger Heung-Min Son, who stepped up in this time of crisis scoring 11 goals from 27 outings, the Lilywhites would surely be lingering down the top half of the table, fighting for a Europa League qualification spot.
Now with Tottenham closest to topple Chelsea off their title run as well as spoil their FA Cup campaign, Pochettino finds himself lining up Janssen as the sole striker, hoping that the 22-year-old would get back his touch suddenly and start netting. This season is undoubtedly Spurs’ best campaign after a long, long time and they would only want to improve upon it from the next season onwards.
And one of the most assured ship-ins coming summer is expected to be a striker. After facing failures in chasing highly-rated names like Janssen and Moussa Sissoko last summer, Spurs are reportedly plotting a move for Burnley sensation Andre Gray.
Apparently, the Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is pretty much sure of his decision to dispose Janssen of at the end of the season and he would be using the funds to bring in the Turf Moor favourite to White Hart Lane. The 25-year-old has been one of the many revelations, the Clarets have produced this season and also one of the many touted to be a big money departure at the end of the season.
Though he has managed only eight goals and two assists in 26 outings under Sean Dyche, Pochettino believes Gray has the qualities to become a great forward. According to Sunday Mail, his goals ratio approaches one-in-two in the lower leagues and nine strikes so far, this season suggesting that there is more to come.
Gray joined Burnley from Brentford back in 2015 for just £9m and has only 12 months remaining on his current contract. And with the striker fully aware of his suitors in the transfer market, he is unlikely to extend his contract without testing them.
