Manchester United are looking to continue their spending spree in the coming summer as the team heads towards ending a dismal domestic season yet again. Despite beefing up their midfield to a great extent by bringing in the towering Paul Pogba for a whopping £89 million, United have struggled hugely in accomplishing their targets.
And according to reports, the Red Devils are now targeting Tottenham Hotspur’s star midfielder Eric Dier next. Jose Mourinho has come under huge criticism this season after his big money player amounted to little more than nothing, but he seems to enjoy the full trust of the club for the next season.
After spending a staggering £150 million last summer that fetched them Pogba, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mourinho is reportedly having another £200 million for the next season’s transfer window. And the manager is expected to go on huge bidding wars for some of the most highly rated stars across Europe that include Harry Kane, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Marco Verratti to name a few.
Pogba, who was a superstar in Serie A side Juventus has failed in the Premier League; and one of the prime reasons for that has been his partner. While Ander Herrera has kept up the pace with the Frenchman, the other options of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick have struggled. And while United disposed of Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin in the winter, they are yet to replace them.
With the experienced duo leaving United next season, Mourinho thinks Dier could be an ideal option to fill in, as per reports. His talents were recognised by manager Mauricio Pochettino back in the 2014-15 season when the Argentine took charge of Spurs. He has since established himself as an important piece of Tottenham’s grand plan alongside Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
The 23-year-old has been immensely impressive this season playing equally well as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-half. His versatility could be a huge asset for any team. He has made 37 appearances so far and his solid defensive contribution and intelligent game reading abilities have put him on a high pedestal among English talents.
However, getting the main player of a direct rival is a huge challenge and United might have to shell out in excess of £40million, which is if Spurs would want to part ways with the player. Dier’s contract with Spurs runs till 2021 and it would be difficult to lure him, especially when United are struggling to secure a Champions League spot.
