Jermain Defoe remains a vital cog in Sunderland’s relegation fight but the Black Cats could lose the player if they get relegated to the Championship this season. Time and again Sunderland have picked up their form at crunch moments to survive but this season their chances of getting dropped to the English second tier is very high.
The Black Cats have been reeling at the bottom of the table and are seven points adrift of 17th placed Swansea. David Moyes has been struggling with this team but Defoe continues to be the sole shining light at the Stadium of Light.
The 34-year-old netted 15 goals last season and has added 14 more this term for Sunderland. The club should be thankful to Sam Allardyce as the former England manager was the man who convinced the England international to extend his stay at the club.
But if Sunderland fails to secure a place in the Premier League next season, Defoe is likely to leave the club as a number of Premier League clubs are very eager to take him on their side.
Three Possible Destinations For Jermain Defoe
Everton
Ronald Koeman is unsure over the future of Romelu Lukaku who rejected a new contract extension. The Belgian striker has had a tremendous impact for the Toffees this season and has been one of the most influential players at the Goodison Park scoring 21 goals in the Premier League this term. His goal scoring ability has seen him linked with a number of clubs and he might leave the club if the situation persists.
Ronald Koeman would need a prolific goal scorer who could fit in his system and he might give a call to Jermain Defoe. Defoe is in his late thirties but has proved that he can do the task which has been assigned to him- scoring goals.
West Ham United
Slaven Bilic could again try his luck in bringing the player to the London Stadium. The gaffer has earlier failed with a £6m bid in the winter and might go again in the upcoming summer window. Bilic has suffered from striker issues as both Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho have been sidelined for a brief period due to injuries. Defoe could still offer a threat upfront and would be an ideal signing for the Hammers.
Crystal Palace
A reunion with Sam Allardyce might happen in future if Defoe considers leaving the Stadium of Light. A keen admirer of Defoe, Big Sam had a great influence on the player with whom he has spent some excellent seasons including the last one.
Defoe’s form for the North East club has earned him an England recall after four years and he has to maintain his stint in the top flight to keep his spot intact in the Three Lions squad. This might give a little bit of edge towards his transfer to the Selhurst Park in upcoming days.
