Leeds United are enjoying a fruitful season in the Sky Bet Championship and are one of the promotion hopefuls as the league enters it’s the business end. With 69 points from 38 games, Garry Monk’s outfit have defied the popular notion and have constructed a side good enough to play in the top flight of English football.
Irrespective of whether they get promoted or not, Monk will need to not only dig into the transfer window in the summer but will also have to take a few bold decisions with respect to clearing the deadwood from his ranks and here are three such players whose Leeds United career might be brought to a close at the end of the season.
Toumani Diagouraga
Out on loan to Ipswich Town, Toumani Diagouraga’s days in the white shirt are severely numbered as he has been repeatedly overlooked by his boss after Leeds United’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Queens Park Rangers in the opening fixture.
He might have the requisite quality but he really hasn’t been able to make any noteworthy impression on Monk. In fact, he was made to train with the Under23’s by the club and it is likely he will face the axe once the curtains of the summer transfer window get lifted.
Ross Turnbull
Veteran goalkeeper, Robert Green, earned a contract extension for a year owing to the humungous level of contribution he has made to the Whites so far this campaign with the gloves. The 37-year-old has played all the league games so far this season and with Monk’s persistence to carry on with Green, Ross Turnbull’s Leeds United career is likely to be dealt another blow.
Besides, the availability of Marco Silvestri and Bailey-Peacock Farell implies that the Peacocks have plenty of resources at their disposal, as far as the goalkeeping role is concerned. Thus, it would be wise, even from the point of view of the 32-year-old, to end his association with the West Yorkshire based outfit.
Giuseppe Bellusci
After getting accustomed to the high standards set by the central defensive pairing of Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley, a trouble-prone centre-back in the shape of Giuseppe Bellusci might not get another chance to ply his trade at Leeds United.
He was sent out on loan to Serie A outfit, Empoli, in the summer but hasn’t really made the most out of it and bringing his tenure at the Elland Road to a close must be playing on the mind of the former Swansea City manager.
