Mark Warburton did a decent job as a manager for Rangers, for he reintroduced them to the Scottish Premiership, assembled a decent side and made them productive enough to challenge for European competitions’ second-tier spots.
Last month, in pretty awkward circumstances, Warburton decided to end his managerial association with the Glasgow-based club and eventually, a relatively unfamiliar face in the shape of Pedro Caixinha took over the reins.
The Portuguese’s tenure at the Ibrox Stadium started in a pretty good fashion, as the Gers notched a 4-0 victory over Hamilton Academical. However, one must admit that Rangers are, quality wise, severely inferior to what their arch rivals, Celtic, have at their disposal.
Apart from scouting for quality players in the summer transfer window, it would be crucial on the part of Caixinha to keep the group cohesiveness intact, for any sale on their part would mean that there would be an impact on the same.
Reports have started to emerge that Martyn Waghorn has been on the radar of clubs like Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town and Sunderland. The 27-year-old striker has scored 6 goals in 22 appearances in the Ladbrokes Premiership and is the joint highest goal-getter for the Light Blues along with veteran Kenny Miller.
Waghorn carved his name on the scoresheet in Rangers’ recent 4-0 domination over Hamilton Academical via a cleanly struck penalty and no wonder that some of the quality clubs are keeping a close eye on him.
Predominantly a poacher up front, Waghorn can be equally efficient when played on either wing. Physically commanding, the former Wigan Athletic hitman is very capable of holding the ball up in the final third, is excellent in making the most out of the dead balls more often than not, has always been a threat during set-pieces, has the requisite experience in the top flight of the Scottish football.
Hence it is no wonder seeing him leave the Ibrox Stadium would be the last thing which the Rangers faithful could possibly wish for.
An exit of Waghorn would imply the need to get a replacement and let’s not turn our back to the dearth of a consistent striker in the business.
Besides, Waghorn is pretty much familiar with how things shape up on the Scottish soil and it would be absolutely foolish on the part of the Teddy Bears to let one of their performing assets leave the club in the summer.
