It seems like after years of staying under the shadow of their North-London rivals Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur are finally all set to get out of it and bask in the glory. A determined Spurs team downplayed all doubts which had emerged from Harry Kane’s absence as they beat Southampton 2-1 to close the gap with league leaders Chelsea to 10 points yet again and are now nine points ahead of Arsenal.
Here is how they fared in the game-
Hugo Lloris (7)- A typical home performance by Spurs where the goalie had to do little more than routine saves and ball collection. And given Lloris’ quality, he hardly let any risky situation arise in his area.
Eric Dier (6)- A bit surprised at the sloppiness seen in his display today. He has been one of most consistent players for Pochettino. And though he had some brilliant interventions, he looked nervy.
Toby Alderweireld (6.5)- He cannot forgive himself for the blunder, which led to Southampton’s goal early in the second half. Also, had a well-taken header saved in the opposite end. Wasn’t his day actually.
Jan Vertonghen (7.5)- As cool as he will ever be. Though Southampton tried to press high and create chances, his calm defending rarely let that happen. Shane Long was in his pocket the whole game.
Ben Davies (6)- He is not Danny Rose and giving him the same responsibility might prove costly someday. Was lucky not to concede the penalty.
Kyle Walker (7.5)- Was up for the task for the full 90 minutes. Saints’ winger Nathan Redmond was brimming with confidence and competed with him well.
Victor Wanyama (8)- He was a beast in the midfield. He did everything just perfectly and commanded the area brilliantly.
Mousa Dembele (7.5)- When Wanyama does most of the work, it does bring out the best in him. His technique on the ball seems unparalleled at times.
Christian Eriksen (8.5)- Easily the best player on the field today. He has been unstoppable for Tottenham of late and Spurs might have finally found Luka Modric’s replacement. The opening goal was beautifully taken.
Dele Alli (8)- He synced with Eriksen really well throughout the game and the duo split Southampton’s defence repeatedly. The penalty was taken in the most composed manner.
Son Heung-Min (7)- He missed some really sure shot chances that otherwise could have increased the lead by a bigger margin and him not being clinical led to him being substituted in the final quarter of the game as Pochettino wanted to keep the slim lead intact.
