West Bromwich Albion isn’t seemingly interested in remaining as a mid-table club anymore. Under the excellent tutelage of Tony Pulis, the Baggies are already taking marauding steps to get into the Europa League spot, after having collected 40 points in their 27 outings in the Premier League and are placed 8th on league table at the moment.
A difference of 10 points from 5th place outfit in the shape of Arsenal (which is the Europa League spot) might appear to be a bit too much to close down going into the business end of the season, but with the way West Brom are striding forward, they do look like a prospective real deal for the coming seasons. And apparently, Pulis has dropped a huge statement of intent after he admitted that he is interested in luring Chelsea’s grand old guardian, John Terry, to the Hawthorns.
Chelsea are in a flamboyant mood this season at the top tier of English football under the regime of Antonio Conte. The league leaders are flying high but then, the Italian has overlooked the services of their veteran central defender in the shape of Terry whilst implementing his project of resurrecting the Blues. So far this campaign, the Englishman has garnered merely 5 appearances, in which he has made just 1 tackle with a success rate of 17%, 2 interceptions, 16 clearances and 2 blocks: these statistics aren’t really what we are accustomed to seeing besides his name, are we?
Despite being on the wrong side of the thirties, Terry still has the calibre of standing tall to the hostilities which Premier League has on offer. No matter how loyal he is to the club he has been with for more than two decades (including his youth career), he has to make a tough call in the summer transfer window, considering the fact that Conte isn’t likely to hand him an extension of his contract which expires at the end of the ongoing campaign.
West Bromwich Albion is arguably a well-tailored outfit for someone like the 36-year-old. Pulis has always been an advocate of maintaining a compact defence and cultivating the tactics of slowing down the tempo of the game and to implement it on the pitch, Terry would fit the bill meticulously.
Terry is tall, technically sharp and in the recent seasons, we have seen Pulis getting the best out of ageing defenders like Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley and there is no reason why he cannot replicate the same with the Chelsea legend. Should Terry make a move, the Throstles would get the chance of landing their hands on an inspiring leader on the pitch which will definitely come handy in their pursuits of finishing higher on the league chart next season.
