Real Madrid might have just edged past Manchester United as the favourites to sign Portuguese star Bernardo Silva, according to latest reports. The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the player who has been hugely impressive in Ligue 1 since his move to AS Monaco two years back. Now, with Real’s transfer ban lifted, Zidane is eyeing to fill the loose ends Los Blancos have in their squad.
Silva is one of the many stars that Monaco have brought up over the past couple of years and the club is expected to cash in on them next summer, as per French news outlet Le10 Sport. And apparently, Bernardo would prioritise a move to Real Madrid ahead of Manchester United. The Portuguese winger will definitely have a huge price labelled on him and now that Monaco are already aware of his huge demand in the football market, the French side is expecting a bid in the region of at least €50million (£43.4m).
Given the number of European heavyweights chasing him, we are anticipating a bidding war before the start of next season. Both United and Real are in dire need of quality attacking midfielders, who can play equally well both in the wide areas as well as centrally. And Madrid guaranteeing Champions League participation and the ability to challenge in the competition on a regular basis will add to the lure of joining the Spanish club.
Attacking midfielders like James Rodriguez and Isco have a high chance of leaving Bernabeu at the end of the season and Zidane has a list of names ready, who could fill in their shoes. And Silva fits the bill quite perfectly. The 22-year old has scored eight times and registered seven assists in 27 Ligue 1 appearances this season, so far, showing immense maturity in finishing and finding sublime passes.
A youth product of Benfica, Silva has made his mark quite early and broke into the first team quite easily. After spending a short but impressive stint with Monaco, he made his move permanent in 2015. His contract with Monaco expires in 2020 and the French side are prepared to let him go earlier than that if their valuation is met.
One of his greatest strengths is his adeptness in both offence and defence. His ability to hold the ball high up the field is quite exceptional and could be handy for any club in the world. However, his small frame could be a disadvantage and with time he has to work on his physique to prosper in the top clubs in Europe.
