According to latest reports, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has offered Borussia Dortmund forward Mario Götze a chance to revive his career at Anfield. The former Dortmund manager, who managed the player before his move to Bayern Munich in 2013, tried to land Germany’s World Cup hero last summer without success as Götze decided to re-join his youth club after Bayern let him go last summer.
Now, with the player’s future uncertain as he has been diagnosed with metabolic disturbances and the club announcing that he has been ruled out ‘for the time being’, the 49-year-old manager is considering taking his chances with him again.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has had some of his best seasons under Klopp during their stint at Dortmund, where he scored 31 goals and registered 45 assists in 116 appearances. Götze has scored more goals only under Guardiola (36), although his assists had dropped under the current Manchester City boss (24). No doubt Klopp still thinks he could utilise him in the most optimum manner.
And there is a high chance that Götze could revive his stuttering career at England under his old boss. Götze is only 24 and has a long time ahead of him. A hugely versatile player, he can play anywhere across the attacking third, and his ability to hold the ball high up the field mixed with some sublime dribbling skills and intelligent passing makes him one of best players in his position.
Liverpool’s attack has been hugely inconsistent this season. While the Reds have been brilliant against the top six, their attack has lacked serious sharpness against midtable and teams lower down the table. The best example of that has been Sadio Mane’s form of late. The Senegalese was so poor in Liverpool’s game against Leicester City, which they lost, that he was subbed off early. The following week he had a man of the match display against Arsenal.
Liverpool getting Götze to play alongside the likes of Phillipe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana could be a dream come true for many Liverpool fans, however, Götze’s fitness might be a monumental hindrance in turning that dream into reality.
Apart from the recent injury, which is keeping him out for an uncertain period currently, the German international has a long injury history. In his professional playing career, the midfielder has seen himself extremely susceptible to injuries, which includes some really lengthy spells on the sidelines.
He has missed eight games for Dortmund and Munich in 2013 during his move to the other side, as he was suffering from a torn muscle bundle that kept him out for 81 days. Another injury worth mentioning was in 2015 when he pulled his hamstring, which kept him out for 116 days as a result of which he missed 17 games. We hope, Liverpool know what they are getting into if they do go forward and sign the gifted but unlucky player.
