According to latest reports, Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho is planning a huge £80million bid for Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane in the summer. The Red Devils have been immensely dependent on a free transfer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season, who has single-handedly carried United so far. But he is not getting any younger and might have just one more season left in him to perform at the highest level.
With Wayne Rooney’s future in huge darkness, who is expected to leave this summer, Mourinho has been desperate to bring in big names in the striker’s position, which has prompted La Liga star Antoine Griezmann’s name to pop up every now and then. But, pulling off that transfer seems highly unlikely anytime soon and reportedly the United manager is eyeing Kane as an alternative option for the Frenchman.
Though tasting success in this deal is going to be equally difficult as United are trying to buy a huge star from their direct rivals and title contenders of late, but Mourinho is expected to test their resolve with an astronomical bid. The Tottenham Hotspur striker has been nothing short of magnificent this season so far, banging in 17 goals in 21 league appearances.
An academy product of Tottenham, he was one of the stars unearthed when Mauricio Pochettino took charge of the reins two seasons back. Although Manchester United Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is more than content to shell out Griezmann’s £85million release clause, there are still doubts over his possible move to Old Trafford despite good friend and compatriot Paul Pogba’s attempts to convince him to leave Vicente Calderon for England.
Though Griezmann still remains United’s first priority, Kane’s emergence as the second choice is sure to create a storm. Kane has signed a new deal with Tottenham only earlier this season and Woodward knows it would be quite complex to pull off a move this summer but Mourinho is reportedly keen on his signature.
A closer look at both the targets and one will realise that Kane is greatly suited as a forward to use in the English football. Having spent loan stints at Leyton Orient, Millwall FC, Norwich City and Leicester City before breaking into the Spurs first team, Kane has considerable experience of the kind of football played in England and can perform at the highest level week in week out.
His big frame makes him a winner in aerial duels, which is hugely advantageous in Premier League. And his ability to finish is at the highest level, something which is evident from his current form. The 23-year-old has scored three hat tricks in his last nine games and with the likes of Pogba, Mata and Mkhitaryan playing alongside him, he could be devastating.
