VFB Stuttgart playmaker Alexandru Maxim has been linked with a move away to Leeds United. The 26-year-old has been struggling to nail down a regular first team spot and wasn’t even in the match-day squad in Stuttgart’s 2-1 win over Heidenheim.
Garry Monk’s side have won two matches out of last three and are flying high in the Championship. The Whites are currently in the playoff places but their form hasn’t been very consistent. They lost back to back matches against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City but got back to winning ways against Bristol City.
However, with the current side, it might be a little bit difficult if they do get promoted to the Premier League next season given the unbelievable quality on offer in the top tier of the English game. Leeds United currently have mostly Championship quality players while Premier League is completely a different ball game.
Monk had earlier tried to rope in Maxim to the Liberty stadium in 2015 when he was in the charge of the Wales-based club. The player has started just eight games this season and has found the target two times alongside five assists.
The Bundesliga club got relegated last season and are currently topping the Bundesliga 2. Maxim has notched up 123 appearances for the club but this season hasn’t been the same as the previous one. The Romanian has struggled to feature in the first team for VFB Stuttgart which led to a number of clubs being linked with him. His agent has confirmed there have been interests from a number of clubs with Leeds United being one of them.
Stuttgart general manager Jan Schindelmeiser revealed that there are few talented players finding it hard to get ample game time. “The guys are all outstanding. Although some of them are finding it very difficult at the moment.”
With the promotion battle set to intensify in the coming month, Monk would be trying hard to get maximum points from the remaining games. It has been reported that Mexican side Club America are also very determined to take him and the Whites have to fend off competitions from them if they really want to sign the player.
There cannot be any doubt in anyone’s mind that Leeds United need the quality next season, especially if they are successful in their promotion bid. Given Alexandru Maxim’s pedigree, there cannot be any doubt that Monk has to make the move for him if the opportunity indeed arises. It would be indeed stupidity of the highest level if Leeds United takes a pass on this move.
