Tottenham Hotspur’s current season progress makes it very difficult to predict where they will finally end up. The Lilywhites have lost to the weakest of opponents (against Gent in Europa League) and won against the strongest and the most in-form of sides (against Chelsea) this season.
However, what one can predict is that the North-London club would be going full throttle to bolster their squad this summer. Despite having one of the best sides in the Premier League, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has often found it difficult to successfully replace the first-choice players due to lack of depth in the squad; which perhaps is the primary factor for their failure in the European platform.
One of the departments that Spurs need immediate beefing up is their midfield. Pochettino likes to play with five midfielders in the side and he would be needing more options to shuffle his squad effectively. According to latest reports, Tottenham are rekindling their interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s youngster Adrien Rabiot coming summer.
The 21-year-old was one of their primary targets when Pochettino first took charge of Tottenham in 2015 and they are now ready to both position-wise and financially to table a bid for the highly-rated French international. He has a contract at the Parc des Princes until 2019 but earlier his month he stated that signing a new deal was “not urgent.”
Rabiot said recently, “If there are offers from big clubs, that obviously demands that they are considered. Clubs like Real Madrid, they are great clubs… I had a choice between six or seven clubs that were really frank in their proposals, most of them English clubs like West Ham, Middlesbrough, there was Tottenham also at one point… there was Napoli, where I was truly very close to signing…”
The midfielder has won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles, the Coupe de France twice and the Coupe de la Ligue three times with PSG, establishing himself as an important player for the French side this season. He also starred alongside Marco Verratti in their 4-0 win against Barcelona last week in the Champions League.
A central midfielder by nature, Rabiot has shown maturity way more than his age in his ability to read the game and timing his tackles pitch perfectly. Very few players in the French league can pass the ball as brilliantly as Rabiot and his ability to dribble past opponents seems unparalleled at times.
He will be a valuable addition to any squad and Spurs will have to fight with the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona to land him, which obviously won’t be easy.
