Jose Mourinho has requested Manchester United supporters that they must do everything to convince Zlatan Ibrahimović to stay put at the club. He scored the winning as United triumphed in the EFL Cup final defeating Southampton 3-2.
Zlatan arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer on a free transfer and this is his second trophy with United. He had earlier scored a late winner for United in the Community Shield as they got the better of Leicester City. He continued his form as his towering header from a Ander Herrera cross at the stroke of 87th minutes sealed the fate of the match.
United took the lead through Zlatan and Jesse Lingard doubled the lead with a swift strike a few minutes later. But a Manolo Gabbiadini double helped the Saints draw level in the game. Gabbiadini could have had his hat-trick but his goal was disallowed for offside although he was onside.
Mourinho, who now has won two trophies in his maiden stint with the Red Devils, has urged the support of the fans. “If needed, United fans can go to the door of his house and stay there all night,
“If needed, they will go, for sure.
“To get what we need for him to stay one more year. I honestly think he won the game for us because he was outstanding in a match where our opponents were better than us for long periods – and in a game where I think Southampton deserved to go to extra-time. They didn’t deserve to lose in 90 minutes.
“I was Zlatan’s manager [at Internazionale] and I know the potential of him. But it is all down to him. He came to England at 35 because he felt ready. Only a silly player comes to England at that age, with the successful career he had had, if he thinks he cannot do it.”
