Garry Monk believes Leeds United deserves the victory over Sheffield Wednesday. The Whites edged the Owls by a solitary goal scored by Chris Wood.
Leeds United climbed up to the fourth position in the Championship over Reading who were yet to take on Brighton at that particular moment. The win gives them a three point edge over Sheffield Wednesday who remained at the sixth position.
Chris Wood maintained his sensational form as he scored his 23rd goal of the season to give his team a very important three points. He latched on a mistake from Vincent Sasso and poked the ball into the net to secure a double over their Yorkshire rival this season.
The victory would not have been possible without the heroics of Rob Green. Souleymane Doukara fouled Sam Hutchinson inside the box and the referee immediately indicated to the spot. The Leeds United custodian came to the rescue as he brilliantly saved the kick of Jordan Rhodes who is struggling to get into the groove since his move from Middlesbrough in January.
The match was evenly poised and both teams had their chances. Leeds United had a penalty appeal turned down when Eunan O’Kane was tripped by Hutchinson but the referee decided to wave play on.
Monk said, “We were playing a very good side in Sheffield Wednesday,
“I thought they put some pressure on but we dealt with it extremely well.
“I can’t remember them having any shots on goal apart from the penalty so that was very pleasing.
“The pressure that’s there to win these types of games, both teams on the same points, a derby game. I thought we handled the pressure really well today and I’m very pleased with the players.”
Over 35000 supporters thronged the ground to see their beloved club edge closer to retaining a playoff berth. With the way they have been performing this season, it would be very harsh for them if they fail to qualify for the English top flight next season.
