Tottenham Hotspur’s immense dependency on Harry Kane in their attack hasn’t gone unnoticed. This might be one of the biggest reasons they have failed away from home repeatedly this season. When the towering forward isn’t at his scoring best, the Lilywhites have struggled to make any sort of impact as they often failed to come up with a backup plan.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino had tried solving it by bringing Dutch forward Victor Janssen last summer, but the 22-year-old has managed to net only four goals so far. Terrific displays from Dele Alli and Christin Eriksen have helped Spurs stay up in the domestic league for now, but the Argentine boss is expected to ship in more attacking solutions this summer.
And according to reports, Spanish side Atletico Madrid have recently contacted Tottenham over a summer deal for their forward Kevin Gameiro, who has struggled since joining from Sevilla for a huge £35million last summer.
And although the France international has been in decent form lately scoring a six-minute hat-trick for the Roji Blancos against Sporting Gijon on Saturday night, he hasn’t exactly turned out as Diego Simeone hopes for. Even when not at his best, the 29-year-old has netted 13 games in 35 appearances registering five assists. Such is the competition at Vicente Calderon that despite some brilliant displays he has still fallen down the pecking order to former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres and Griezmann.
According to the Mirror, Tottenham have been offered the forward to ease the goalscoring burden on Harry Kane. Although Pochettino has backed Janssen despite his poor display, there are doubts he will stay at the club next season. Gameiro scored once and assisted another in Atletico’s crucial away leg in Germany against Bayer Leverkusen earning a man of the match performance last midweek. If Tottenham don’t agree to the deal now, Simeone might change his mind later.
The 178cm centre forward can hold the ball quite well up front and can produce some of the most brilliant finishes. He also has the knack of coming deep to win balls and pass it to the flanks. With the likes of Carrasco and Greizmann up front, he has been quite impactful at times. Tottenham have a similar playing setup with the likes of Eriksen, Dembele, Sissoko and Alli playing similar roles and Gameiro wouldn’t need much adapting.
However, his small frame could be a concern in the centre-forward position, who has to absorb immense pressure from towering defenders. Gameiro also suits best in the central position, which is not what Pochettino likes as he is often seen experimenting in the attacking third.
