Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick could miss the EFL Cup final on Sunday, Jose Mourinho has revealed. Mkhitaryan had to be substituted early as he pulled his hamstring against St Etienne in the Uefa Europa League match.
Mkhitaryan scored with a slick touch as his solitary goal secured a passage to the quarterfinal of the Europa League. But the Armenian playmaker limped off after just 25 minutes and was replaced by Marcus Rashford.
Midfielder Michael Carrick also had to leave the field with a calf problem and might not get fit in time to be available for Sunday’s crunch game. These injuries are a major concern for Jose Mourinho who has to field his best lineup against Southampton in the Cup Final.
Mourinho said, “Honestly, I don’t think he (Mkhitaryan) is fit (for the final). I think him and Michael, I think (they’re) both out.
“But this is based on my experience, not based on my medical knowledge, not based on tests and what they have obviously to do tomorrow and after tomorrow.
“I think no chance. I repeat, it’s just my experience: a calf, a hamstring, even if minor, minor, some fibres are damaged. I think (they’re) out.”
