Celtic Set To Reignite Interest For This January Transfer Target: Why He Would Bolster The Hoops Backline

If a recent report from the Goal (as cited by The Daily Record) is believed to be true, Celtic maintain their interest in Oskar Wojcik, despite being knocked back by Cracovia in the winter window. They offered a fee of around £3.5m for the centre-back, but the Polish side demanded a higher fee, having set a valuation of £4.3m earlier this year.

While the Hoops are likely to return in the summer, it won’t be a free run for them, with Serie A outfits Torino, Fiorentina, and Bologna, as well as Coventry City and several other Championship clubs keeping close tabs on the 22-year-old. Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard could fascinate him to ply his trade in England. However, joining Celtic could see him attain an immediate starting status in the heart of the backline.

Wojcik spent his academy years across Rylovia Rylowa, Tarnovia Tarnów and Cracovia before impressing for the latter’s reserves, along with a brief loan stint at GKS Belchatow in the lower leagues of Polish football. He made his senior debut towards the end of the previous campaign, but has been a regular since the start of the 2025-26 season.

Why Celtic Should Get The Deal Done

Although Cracovia are only a couple of points clear of the drop zone in the Ekstraklasa standings, the youngster has been praised for his physical and aerial supremacy, tactical maturity, technical composure and ball-playing attribute. He holds all the traits of a modern-day centre-half, and the Hoops, regardless of having Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Liam Scales as the senior central defensive options, could bolster themselves in deep defence as part of a squad overhaul.

Meanwhile, the future of both Dane Murray and Stephen Welsh is uncertain due to limited involvement in recent years. Benjamin Arthur, on loan from Brentford, is unlikely to return for a sporadic status. Also, it remains unclear how long it would take for Carter-Vickers to regain full fitness after rupturing his Achilles tendon back in late October.

A move to Parkhead would not only offer a faster pathway to success but also an opportunity to battle for silverware, alongside competing in Europe. Celtic might include Maik Nawrocki, currently on loan at Hannover 96, in any potential deal to streamline the transfer. But, they must appoint a new manager first, as the role will be vacant soon, with Martin O’Neill set to depart by the end of this month.
