Rangers Weighing Up Move For This Championship Left-back: Why Rohl Must Script Reunion In Due Time

If a recent transfer update from The Star is believed to be true, Rangers are keeping close tabs on Max Lowe, having enquired about the versatile Sheffield Wednesday left fullback. Danny Rohl could raid his former club to bolster the Glasgow giants; however, the Owls would prefer to retain the defender with no financial constraints, despite being placed in administration back in October.

The 28-year-old former England youth international progressed through the academy ranks of Derby County before making his professional debut in August 2016. He was sent out on loan to Shrewsbury Town and Aberdeen, respectively, for regular gametime, and an impressive 2019-20 campaign in the Championship earned him a €3.85m move to the then Premier League outfit Sheffield United.

Lowe struggled in the top-flight and was eventually loaned out to Nottingham Forest following the Blades’ relegation in 2021. He revived his place at Bramall Lane during the 2022–23 season and helped them script a Premier League return under Paul Heckingbottom. After spending the next campaign as the understudy to Auston Trusty and Jack Robinson, the Englishman left for the city rivals, Wednesday, on a Bosman upon the expiration of his United contract.

Why Rangers Should Make A Move This Month

Rangers, meanwhile, have bolstered the left-back spot by snapping up Tuur Rommens from Westerlo. The Belgian arrivals would offer the much-needed competition to Jayden Meghoma, who was the only designated option roped in the summer after losing Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz. The on-loan Brentford teenager has been exquisite down the left, but the Gers might be forced to explore the market if the Bees recall their prized asset in the summer.

Lowe flourished under Rohl last season, as he featured 37 times across competitions. He continues to be the preferred choice of Henrik Pedersen, who hopes to keep hold of his defensive ace even if the Light Blues return with a formal bid later this month.

“I don’t know. But I also hope Maxxy will stay. He is very important for us, but it’s out of my control. I can only inspire to keep all of our players so we can have as competitive team as possible.”

Having said that, the Owls are heading towards relegation to League One, as they are stuck at rock bottom in the Championship standings with -7 points after an 18-point deduction in total due to multiple breaches. Several top names are expected to part ways, including Lowe, who could be tied down on a pre-contract agreement. His Hillsborough contract expires in the summer, and a reunion with the German boss might be on the cards, sooner or later.
