Any chance of a playoff qualification further slipped from Derby County’s hands as Steve McClaren’s men suffered a shocking defeat against Cardiff City, who seem to be on a rampaging run at the moment. The Rams are now in the 11th position collecting only 47 points from 31 games.
Although the campaign is seemingly turning out to be just another season in Championship with nothing to aim at, the Championship table has been maddeningly volatile so far and a string of wins could well place Derby in a favourable position by the end of the season.
They face Blackburn Rovers next, who although has been an underwhelming season so far, could turn out to be a dangerous opponent at any given time. If you don’t believe us, ask league leaders Newcastle United.
Predicted Derby County XI vs Blackburn Rovers
Defence
With all the cup competitions now over, McClaren is expected to field his strongest eleven to get the best results in every game. Scott Carson is expected to take his position between the sticks. The English shot stopper had a nightmarish game in the midweek and he would be hoping to keep it behind when he starts in the next game.
The first-choice backline is expected to start this time. Marcus Olsson should take his place in the left-back position and Chris Baird will take his position on the other defensive flank. Alex Pearce is expected to start in the central defence alongside skipper Richard Keogh again.
Midfield
Young Julien de Sart is once again expected to start in the deep midfield. He got the opener against Cardiff City last game early in the game and the boss would hope he keeps his touch. He will start behind Will Hughes and Bradley Johnson. Jacob Butterfield started the midweek’s game and McClaren is expected to bring on Johnson this time.
Johnson has scored twice and registered one assist from the midfield this season and McClaren badly missed the calmness and composure that the 29-year-old brings.
Attack
Although there were hardly any complaints concerning Derby’s attack in their high-scoring defeat in the last game, they had squandered some real chances that could have seen the end result differently. Tom Ince is expected to step in his favoured right-flank again. He created the pass for Derby’s second goal last game. Johnny Russell is expected to replace Ikechi Anya on the left. Russell started from the bench last game and it didn’t seem like the perfect team selection.
Derby’s star striker Darren Bent will once again spearhead their attack. The 33-year-old scored a brace last game but it wasn’t enough or Derby to get three points.
