In a recent report, journalist Fraser Fletcher revealed that Barcelona are among the clubs hoping to land Napoli talent Scott McTominay. It has been claimed that the Catalan giants would have to compete with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the race to land the Scottish midfielder next year.
McTominay’s Impressive Form In Serie A This Season
McTominay has made an impressive start to this campaign after he put in a string of impressive displays for Napoli at the centre of the park. The Scottish midfield ace has featured in 11 matches for the Italian club this season, scoring four times and securing one assist in multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old has anchored the midfield with conviction and deserves credit for making six tackles, three blocks, five interceptions and eight clearances in Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing possession based on his pass success rate of 81.8% in the Italian first division (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Naples club will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, it won’t be easy for Barcelona to get a deal done for him on the cheap next year.

Is McTominay A Good Option For Barcelona?
McTominay is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when required and is a tidy passer of the ball as well.
The Scottish sensation can even chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. However, there are some concerns over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga if Barcelona manage to bring him on board in 2026.
McTominay would add more bite and steel to Barca boss Hansi Flick’s midfield. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Catalan club in the coming years.
At 28, McTominay is playing in his prime, which makes him a worthy target for Barcelona to pursue this January or next summer. He could even help the Catalan giants challenge for some major trophies over the next few seasons. Hence, McTominay would be a great choice for Barca to consider next year.
