For football neutrals who pay attention to the fortunes and fates of the more storied and historical clubs in the ‘beautiful game’ across the varying major European domestic leagues, ongoing issues with Scottish Premiership side Rangers cannot have escaped their attentions.
It has again been a difficult few seasons for the Ibrox outfit and having dispensed with the services of previous gaffer Philippe Clement, this summer off season was supposed to be the dawn of a new beginning for the Govan based team, but that too seems to have gone quite wrong for the Gers faithful.
Their new Andrew Cavanaugh and 49ers Enterprises group owners came in through the doors and many felt that with their wealth Rangers would be able to tap into an online baccarat casino for real money spending on the squad and it was a busy summer with Russell Martin appointed as their new manager, and quite a few first team squad changes made with well known names leaving, and plenty of others arriving during the transfer window before deadline day hit. However, that has not transmitted to the pitch and fans have had huge issues with their approach and style of play so far, and the less said about results is probably for the better. But we must talk about results.
Before Martin’s sacking, seven games in to the domestic season and they have won only one match, with five draws leaving them down in eighth place in the table, which obviously is not good enough as they at least are expected to challenge for the title. Their Champions League hopes for the 2025/26 campaign did not get past the month of August following an aggregate 9-1 defeat to Belgian side Club Brugge and despite being parachuted into the Europa League, they are yet to win a game in that one either.
For those who watched Martin at Southampton, it was not a great surprise, nor was his sacking earlier this month and even though he lasted longer than many thought, he still goes down as their shortest serving gaffer in history with a tenure spanning just 123 days, and the hits are still coming.
Having held discussions with former manager Steven Gerrard despite of his pathetic spells at Aston Villa and Saudi Arabian Pro League side Al-Ettifaq after he left them, he turned them down, and sadly for Rangers former Sheffield Wednesday gaffer Danny Rohl has now done the same – and less said about the U-turn by Muscat the better. Quite where they go from here is anyone’s guess as whatever the reason might be it is beginning to look like their first choice replacements are beginning to view them as a poison chalice right now.
Other names like Graham Potter are doing the rounds but that feels incredibly unlikely – especially with him talking about international jobs last week. Heart of Midlothian gaffer Derek McInnes has again dismissed speculation linking him with the job.
The whole thing has been fascinating for the neutrals, but even their rivals might be developing some sympathy here.
