Liverpool have had a horrible year till now after managing to win a solitary game in 9 attempts. The Reds had started the season brilliantly dispatching 4 goals past Arsenal and carried that momentum forward to have a stint at the top of the table. Chelsea’s record-breaking run saw that cut short but even then, Klopp’s men were considered the sole challengers to Chelsea’s dominance at the top.
But the loss of Coutinho and then the departure of Mane to the AFCON saw their momentum falter and the one-dimensional approach of the former Borussia Dortmund coach did not seem to be working anymore. They lacked teeth in attack and the defence was shambolic with the likes of Can and Firmino also faltering further up the field.
Worryingly for Liverpool, the return of Mane and Coutinho has not changed the sequence of results and the loss against Hull City put further emphasis on what is wrong with the team. It was a shock for a number of fans when he decided against going for any reinforcements in the January window with a clear need for players coming in. But it was the same story again as they decided against reinforcing their options and it looks like Liverpool have a really tough job on their hands to stay in contention for the Top 4 spots.
While a number of positions look set to be bolstered in the coming window, the left-back has been a cause of concern for a long time now. Milner started off well after replacing Moreno but the extreme workload seems to be catching up with his legs and the level has fallen considerably.
Hence, the reports linking Liverpool with the impressive Hull City left-back Andrew Robertson does not come as a surprise.
The 22-year-old has been quite impressive this season in the back line of Hull City and a number of top clubs are closely monitoring his situation at the club.
The left back made 24 appearances in his first season in the Premier League, but he could not prevent Hull from suffering relegation in 2014. However, he played a significant role in winning the Tigers a promotion back to the Premier League and has been an important player for them despite his young age.
A youth product of Scottish club Queens Park FC, Robertson broke into the first team in 2012 and soon made a level up to Dundee United the following year. His impressive displays led Hull City to pick him up from Scotland in 2014. A perfect left back, Robertson has attracted many clubs with his passing and dribbling skills and could be an asset for any side.
He fits in well with Liverpool’s policy of recruiting young players and would be a vital addition to their squad.
