Swansea City have constantly flirted with the relegation places so far this term but their win against Liverpool last weekend, that too away from home, must have instilled a sense of much-needed positivism in the squad. With that stupendous win, they climbed up the ladder and more importantly, out of the relegation zone. However, the solace is only temporary, for the crunch fixtures that wait for them would put them under intense pressure to perform.
Swansea might have added the likes of Martin Olsson, Luciano Narsingh and Tom Carroll in their squad this month but there is an evident lack of quality up front as Paul Clement’s side can barely think of someone shouldering the responsibilities which Fernando Llorente has been single-handedly doing for them. Frankly speaking, if the Swans are to maximise their chances of having the last laugh in the fight for survival, they must land a forward of decent recognition.
Reportedly, Clement appears to have found what he has been looking for in the shape of Aston Villa’s forward Jordan Ayew, who is the brother of former Swansea City star Andre Ayew. The Ghanaian has been valued at around £8 million but has fallen behind in the pecking order in Steve Bruce’s side who have as many as six strikers waiting in the wings.
Making four huge signings (provided Ayew is roped in) would be a big statement from a club who have constantly hopped around the relegation zone but what would Ayew bring to the Liberty Stadium?
The former Lorient attacker certainly does have the ability in him, for the qualities he has in his locker ranges from his ability to ply his trade anywhere up front and his blistering pace to his knack of dropping deep, collecting the ball and then surging at the opponents. The last campaign was a forgettable one for Aston Villa as they were eventually relegated but Ayew was one of their few players who didn’t deserve to go down.
Ligue 1 has been a hunting ground for Premier League clubs who sniff, select and snatch their targets who more often than not turn out to be productive. Ayew hasn’t begged to differ and if he is signed by Clement, he could be pivotal alongside the likes of Llorente and Narsingh. The 25-year-old’s silky smooth touches and the way he causes problems to the defenders would be propitious for the Wales-based club who are in the dire need of adding attacking flamboyance.
