Arsene Wenger has hailed Danny Welbeck after the striker scored a brace against Southampton in the fourth round FA Cup tie. Arsenal thrashed the Saints 5-0 to secure a place in the next round.
This was Welbeck’s first start since May and the striker made his comeback a memorable one. The former Manchester United forward had been sidelined with a knee problem and had only recovered a few days ago.
Theo Walcott who was also suffering from a calf injury scored a hat-trick to give Arsene Wenger a major selection headache. Wenger would love to have competition in the team as he has a number of tough fixtures ahead including against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
He said, “I think it was good to watch because we had a good game and were very dangerous. We were in control, very explosive.
“Danny Welbeck was very sharp because he has been working very hard. He comes back from a long way out and has gone through some very difficult moments mentally.
“But his resilience was absolutely marvellous and he was rewarded tonight, so we are happy.”
