As reported by Football Insider, Manchester City are considering a January bid for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. The Premier League club want to sign him to fill Rodri’s shoes, who will miss the remainder of the season.
Martin Zubimendi is well established
Martin Zubimendi came through Real Sociedad Academy and made his senior team debut in 2016. However, he had to wait before he could be integrated permanently into the first side. Once he found more opportunities coming his way, he utilized them fully.
Zubimendi has been one of the best midfielders in La Liga over the past few seasons. He featured in 45 games, netting four goals and assisting once last season. He averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 1.7 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish plays as a defensive midfielder and can dictate the flow of the game. He is excellent at tackles, ball interceptions, and blocking the shots. With accurate passing abilities and good decision-making skills, he is a quality player.
A tough signing to execute
Manchester City dealt a major blow when they were informed that Rodri won’t be able to participate in the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL injury. His absence will surely be a big factor on the side considering the qualities he used to bring in the middle of the park.
Hence, the Citizens understand the need to bring in a player who can fill the Spanish’s shoes. The club have interestingly identified his national teammate Martin Zubimendi as a viable fit. The latter also has a similar playing style and is a proven campaigner.
Liverpool were heavily interested in signing Zubimendi this summer but the player decided against joining them. Hence, it remains to be seen if Manchester City will be able to convince him or not. Apart from that, the English giant will also have to put a lucrative deal on the table to get his services.
