According to Fichajes, Manchester United are planning to sign Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks in the January transfer window. The Premier League club believe they still need more quality in the midfield and want to sign an experienced player to get the job done.
Harry Winks’ fortune changed
A product of Tottenham Hotspur Academy, Harry Winks made his senior team debut in 2016. However, he could never establish himself due to a lack of performance and recurring injuries. But things have changed since he joined Leicester City last summer.
Winks has become a key member at his new home and has contributed significantly. He featured in 48 games last season and found the back of the net twice. He averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 0.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The English midfielder plays as a defensive midfielder but can also operate in a neutral role. He doesn’t do tricks but rather likes to keep things simple. He is excellent at passing but doesn’t offer enough aerial presence.
What’s going on at Manchester United?
Manchester United want to sign a midfielder as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are past their primes. The duo cannot be trusted anymore and they need more quality in the midfield unit to be able to compete with top teams.
The Red Devils have identified Harry Winks as a viable option. He has the experience and qualities to perform well at Old Trafford. Moreover, he will be a cheaper option when compared to other lucrative names in the market.
It’s understood that manager Erik ten Hag has already approved the signing. With the player’s contract running out in 2026, Leicester City wouldn’t mind cashing on in if a reasonable offer arrives. However, many could argue that Manchester United already have enough players and there’s no need to add more especially if it’s not for the long term.
