According to a report from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are impressed with River Plate youngster Franco Mastantuono’s progress. The Premier League are keen on signing him but will face stiff competition from major European clubs.
Franco Mastantuono’s rising reputation
Franco Mastantuono initially wanted to pursue a career in Tennis but was tempted to accept River Plate’s offer. He made his senior team debut at the beginning of the last season and has been a key member of the squad since then.
Mastantuono featured in 30 games, netting thrice and assisting twice. While the River Plate fans demanded more game time for the midfielder, coach Martín Demichelis ignored it believing the youngster needed more time to be a starter.
The Argentine primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but can feature in other roles. He is technically sound and possesses good play making abilities. He is also a powerful shooter and can take on defenders in one-on-one situations.
Chelsea to face high competition
Chelsea’s new strategy since the new owners came at the helm of the affairs is known to everyone now. The club have been aggressively pushing to sign young talents and nourish them for future uses. Hence, their interest in Franco Mastantuono shouldn’t surprise anyone.
The Blues believe in the 17-year-old’s abilities and want to sign him next summer. However, they are set to face neck-to-neck competition from the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid. River Plate reportedly want €45 million to part ways with the player.
While the amount seems unreasonably high, Mastantuono has the potential to justify the price tag in years to come. He has high qualities and is bound to get better and better. His versatility in the final third will also be useful for Chelsea.
The Blues will help the youngster develop his game further and use him in the senior team. If he fails to impress, they will look to offload him to raise funds.
