In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that Newcastle United are keen on signing Lille playmaker Angel Gomes. It is understood that the Magpies are eager to recruit the former Manchester United attacker who is open to returning to English football next year.
Gomes’ Impressive Run Of Form In Ligue 1
Gomes enjoyed a decent campaign at Lille recently after he produced a string of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The English talent was involved in 45 matches for the French outfit last season, scoring two goals and securing ten assists across all competitions.
The 24-year-old was a good contributor in the opponent’s half and did well to average 1.1 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in Ligue 1 football. He was even accurate when distributing possession in the final third, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 91.3% in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the French club will expire at the end of this campaign which could give Newcastle a chance to sign him on a free transfer next year.
What Will Gomes Add To Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe’s Side?
Gomes can make a few driving runs with the ball in the opposition half and has got the eye to create some decent chances for his teammates up top. He can even strike the ball with power from long range and can contribute by picking up his fair share of assists.
The London-born is enjoying his football in France at the moment but the jury is still out on whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Magpies manage to bring him on board next year. He is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also serve as a central midfielder if needed.
Gomes would add more creativity to Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe’s frontline. He might even go on to form a productive partnership with Alexander Isak at the Tyneside club over the next few years.
At 24, Gomes has his best years ahead of him and could be a real asset in Newcastle‘s squad in the long run. However, Howe has to be patient with his development before he can unlock the best out of the talented playmaker at St. James’ Park.
