In a recent report, talkSPORT mentioned that Manchester City have identified Bayer 04 Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz as a main target. It is understood that the Mancunian club are eager to get a deal done for the German talent in the future.
Wirtz’s Impressive Campaign In German Football
The 21-year-old had a decent season at Bayer Leverkusen recently as he produced a lot of impressive performances for them in the Bundesliga. Wirtz appeared in 49 matches for the German outfit in the previous campaign, netting 18 times and earning 20 assists across multiple competitions.
The talented youngster proved his worth in the final third by averaging 2.2 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He was even accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates after making 84.6% of his attempted passes in the German top flight (stats via whoscored).
Wirtz’s current deal at the German club will expire in the summer of 2027. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Man City to snap him up on a cut-price deal next year.
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Go For Wirtz?
Wirtz is a good dribbler with the ball and can make a few driving runs with it on the offensive end of the field. He can strike the ball with power and precision from long range and has got the vision to create a few inviting chances for his teammates up top.
The Germany international is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also operate as a winger on either flank if asked to do so by his manager. However, there are some question marks over whether he can handle the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Man City manage to bring him on board next year.
Wirtz would inject more quality into Pep Guardiola‘s frontline. He might even go on to form a great partnership with Erling Haaland at the Mancunian club. At 21, Wirtz has the potential to be a future star in European football. Thus, it makes sense for Man City to go for a player of his quality when the transfer window reopens at the start of 2025. However, Guardiola has to be patient with his development before he can unlock the best out of him at the Etihad Stadium.
