In a recent report, FCInterNews claimed that Aston Villa are locked in a three-way battle for Lille forward Jonathan David. It has been revealed that the Villans would have to rival Inter Milan and Juventus in pursuit of the Canadian talent next year.
David’s Impressive Form In French Football
David had a prolific campaign at the French club after he put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 24-year-old scored 26 times and picked up nine assists in 47 matches for Lille last season across multiple competitions.
The Canadian frontman led the line well for the French club as he averaged 2.3 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Ligue 1. He was even accurate when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after completing 82.7% of his attempted passes in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
David’s current deal at Lille will run out at the end of this season which could open the door for the Villans to sign him on the cheap this January or on a free transfer next summer.
Aston Villa Are Locked In A Three-Way Battle For David: Is He Worth The Fight?
David can find a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He is a good finisher in the final third and can engineer the odd chance for his teammates up top. The Canadian talent is even quite clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty area. He is a tidy passer of the ball as well.
We can expect David to inject more firepower into Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s attack. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the West Midlands club in the coming seasons.
At 24, the best is yet to come from David. However, the jury is still out on whether he can maintain his good form in Premier League football if Emery can devise a way to bring him to Villa Park next year. With all things considered, David would be well worth the fight, so Aston Villa should look to step up their efforts to land him in the future.
