In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona are hoping to land Athletic Bilbao speedster Nico Williams next summer. It has been stated that the Catalan club are eyeing a move to bring the Spanish talent to the Nou Camp at the end of this campaign.
Williams’ Impressive Form In Spanish Football
Williams had a productive campaign at the Spanish club recently after he put in a string of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 22-year-old found the back of the net eight times and picked up 19 assists in 37 matches for Athletic Bilbao last season across all fronts.
The Pamplona-born wide player was a decent contributor in the opponent’s half as he averaged 1.8 shots, 1.5 interceptions and 2.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the wide areas based on his pass completion rate of 79.2% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Williams’ current contract at the San Mames Stadium will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for Barca to sign him on the cheap at the end of this season.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Snap Williams Up Next Summer?
Williams is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He has got the vision to engineer some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and can even strike the ball with venom from long range.
The Spanish sensation is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also operate as a right-winger if asked to do so by his manager. He already knows La Liga well and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Nou Camp if Barcelona can manage to get him on board next summer.
Williams would add more pace and goals to Hansi Flick’s attack. The Spaniard might even help the Catalan club challenge for some major honours over the next few years. At 22, he has the potential to be a world-class winger someday. Therefore, Barca should focus on going all out to snap Williams up at the end of this campaign.
