Manchester United’s long drawn saga involving the Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof has reared its head once again and going by the reports, United are furiously examining whether to sign him now or in the summer window. With only 7 days left, it is a decision that has to be taken quickly.
Although Jose Mourinho has reiterated that he is not looking to bring in any major face in the January window, there might be a surprise from his end as has been the case in the past too.
Irrespective of whether the deal goes through or not, let us take a look at Lindelof a little more closely.
BACKGROUND
Born in the Swedish city of Västerås, Victor Jörgen Nilsson Lindelöf spent his youth career at local clubs IK Franke, Västerås IK and Västerås SK before moving to the Portuguese capital. Initially starting his career for the U-19 team, the Swede made his first team debut on October 19, 2013, in a 1-0 Portuguese Cup victory over CD Cinfães.
Although he had to wait for almost two more seasons to get a first team start, he made the most of the unexpected opportunity that fell in his way in the form of a Euro U-21 call-up for the national team by playing a pivotal role in the Blågult’s triumph. In addition to being included in the Team of the Tournament, he also converted the all-important final spot kick against Portugal in the final.
POSITIVES
His biggest strength which he offers to the team is his versatility. Although primarily a central defender, he has excelled at both right back and in the central defensive midfield position. With Man United’s never-ending defensive woes, this can be breath of fresh air for Jose Mourinho. Lindelof is also known to be rough and tough in addition to possessing an abundance of energy and boasts of sudden acceleration over short distances.
NEGATIVES
Lindelof’s decision-making skills have been highly scrutinised by pundits from time to time. His tendency to go for the last-ditch tackle has cost his team(s) dearly at times. Also, his shortage of first team exposure and experience can prove to be a concern while playing in the world’s most competitive league.
FUTURE
Lindelof has been highly rated by his current club coach Rui Vitoria. With his proposed move to the Theatre of Dreams looking imminent, he has received high praises from his former National team captain and probable United team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“I think he’s good enough for the big clubs out there. It’s up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him,” he has been quoted as saying.
He looks like he can certainly make the grade at Old Trafford and under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho, he is expected to turn into a world class defender in the near future.
