In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano mentioned that Everton are showing interest in Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Romano said,
“Everton have an interest in Kalvin Phillips, not only Everton, but Everton are well informed on the situation.
“They have already made some contact with people close to the player to be aware of the situation around Kalvin Phillips, I still expect him to leave Manchester City if they receive a good proposal.
“So that’s the idea. Everton have an interest, but still nothing advanced or close to being completed, because in this moment, it’s still early stages of the story.”
Phillips’ Unimpressive Loan Spell At The London Stadium
Phillips had an underwhelming loan spell at West Ham United in the previous campaign but managed to put in a few eye-catching displays for them at the centre of the park. The English talent participated in ten matches for the Hammers last season but failed to score or create a goal for them across multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old made most of his appearances off the bench which could be why he only averaged 1.4 tackles and 0.5 interceptions per game in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after making 80% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Snap Phillips Up?
Phillips loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He usually clears the danger when needed and is an accurate passer of the ball.
However, the English talent has to find a way to earn more playing time if he wants to get his career back on track. Phillips mainly plays as a defensive midfielder but can also function as a centre-half or as a box-to-box midfielder if told to do so by his manager.
Phillips would add more energy and dynamism to Everton head coach Sean Dyche’s midfield department. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at Goodison Park next season.
At 28, Phillips is playing at the peak stage of his career. Thus, it makes sense for Dyche to snap him up in this summer transfer period.
