In a recent print edition, Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) revealed that West Ham United are facing tough competition for ex-Barcelona ace Sergi Roberto this summer. It has been stated that the Hammers would have to rival Sevilla, Girona, Ajax, Fiorentina and Como in pursuit of the Spanish talent this month.
Roberto’s Decent Season At The Nou Camp
The 32-year-old was a good rotational piece in Barca’s squad last season when he put in a run of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. Roberto was involved in 24 matches for the Catalan club in the previous campaign, netting three goals and grabbing three assists across all fronts.
The Spanish talent caught the eye at times at the heart of Barcelona’s midfield as he averaged 1.1 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 0.7 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 90.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Roberto is currently a free agent after he was released by Barcelona earlier this summer. Hence, it makes sense for the Hammers to try and sign him on a free transfer before the end of this transfer window.
Will Roberto Be A Good Option For West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui?
Roberto is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and is a decent playmaker in the opponent’s half.
The Spanish sensation has got a wealth of experience at the highest level. However, he might need some time to adjust to life in the Premier League if West Ham manage to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.
At 32, Roberto has still got a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, he would be a good option for the Hammers in the short term. He would add more experience and depth to West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui’s match-day squad.
Roberto is good enough to help the East London outfit push for a top-half finish in the Premier League. Thus, Lopetegui should focus on recruiting him on a free transfer this summer.
