After last week’s stalemate against Hearts, Rangers were determined to get back to winning ways when they hosted Motherwell at Hampden Park. The midweek draw against Dynamo Kyiv boosted their spirit as the contributors of that late equalizer sealed all three points this afternoon.
Below are the Rangers players rated in their 2-1 win against Motherwell.
Jack Butland: 7
Could have done little to stop Robin Propper’s own goal early into the game. Made a crucial save late in the match to protect the lead and avoid yet another setback.
James Tavernier: 6.5
Assisted Cerny who scored spectacularly to restore the lead midway through the first half. Forced Aston Oxborough to make some decent stops, but the skipper was again at fault for not stopping Stevie Seddon’s cross which was fired into his own net by Propper.
John Souttar: 7
The Scotsman dominated the aerial duels and tried his best to build the game up from the back with passes and ball-playing traits. Came close to finding the net, but he failed to direct his header on target from the right side of the six-yard box.
Robin Propper: 6
Not the debut the Dutchman had hoped for when he netted an own goal minutes after Dessers’ opener. But he dominated the duels and was impressive with his tackling attribute, timely interceptions and recoveries. Was replaced by veteran Leon Balogun around the 73rd-minute mark.
Ridvan Yilmaz: 7.5
Another decent outing for the Turkish left fullback who was relentless with his marauding runs, link-up play, crosses and defensive duties. Played his part in the build-up of Dessers’ goal.
Connor Barron: 7.5
Settled in really well deep down the midfield. Impressed with his passing game, vision and calmness on the ball. His emergence has not let Rangers feel Nicolas Raskin’s injury absence in the middle of the park.
Mohamed Diomande: 8
Excellent as a ‘double pivot’ who not only marshalled the backline but also carried the ball forward from the deep to operate in the advanced areas. Set it up for Dessers with a header back across into the Nigerian’s path. Was taken off for Kieran Dowell late in the game.
Vaclav Cerny: 7.5
Philippe Clement was in a dilemma about handing him a start due to the lack of training sessions. But the Czech wideman exhibited his mastery down the right while finding the top corner. Made way for Ross McCausland around the hour mark.
Tom Lawrence: 6.5
Had a bright start in and around the attacking third with smart one-twos, dribbles and link-up play. Got dispossessed a few times and his lack of work rate in midfield resulted in a substitution. Dujon Sterling was introduced to add more depth and movement in the centre of the pitch.
Scott Wright: 7
Was lively down the left-hand flank. Saw his effort being cleared off the line early into the game. Combined well with Yilmaz before making way for Rabbi Matondo with less than 20 minutes remaining.
Cyriel Dessers: 8
Salvaged a draw on Tuesday night in Poland and he continued his scoring streak this afternoon with an early strike. Kept the Motherwell defence on their toes with his runs, positioning and directness from inside the box.
Rangers Subs Vs Motherwell
Dujon Sterling: 6.5
Missed a goal-scoring opportunity midway through the second half.
Ross McCausland: 6.5
His flair and finesse down the right caused menace in the Well backline.
Leon Balogun: 7.5
His inclusion brought back calmness and composure in the heart of Rangers defence.
Rabbi Matondo: 6
Had little impact since coming on as Wright’s replacement.
Kieran Dowell: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
