According to a report from Fichajes, Premier League club Liverpool are marking their presence in the race for Bayer Leverkusen defensive sensation Piero Hincapie as they look to bolster their defensive unit for the next season.
Piero Hincapie has caught the limelight
After plying his trade for multiple clubs, Piero Hincapie arrived at Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength. He has emerged as a solid performer for the club with a bright future ahead.
Hincapie played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s history campaign in the 2023-24 season. He featured in 43 games, netting a goal and providing an assist. He averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 1.9 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Ecuador defender plays as a centre-back but can also feature in the left full-back position. He is an aggressive-minded player who likes to stay close to the attackers. Aerial dominance, confidence, passing accuracy and position awareness are some of his strongest traits.
Piero Hincapie has expressed his desire to leave Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool’s interest in Piero Hincapie makes sense as they are yet to sign a player to fill Joel Matip‘s shoes, who left as a free agent. While the club has been linked to multiple defenders over the past few months, there have been no advancements on those deals yet.
Hincapie, who has three years left on his contract, wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen to accept a new challenge. Hence, it will be easier for the Reds to sign him and negotiate a deal with the German club. However, the signing will definitely not be a cheaper affair.
Talking about Hincapie, he has already started hitting the ground and has shown his massive potential. The 22-year-old can be a long-term investment for Liverpool as they are bound to go under a transition soon. Apart from the Reds, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid are also keeping tabs on the player.
