According to Football Insider, Manchester United are considering making a late move to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer as boss Erik ten Hag wants to add another striker at his disposal after having added Joshua Zirkzee.
Ivan Toney didn’t feature much last season
After representing multiple clubs, Ivan Toney joined Brentford in the summer of 2020. He dropped great performances on the field to emerge as a reliable name on the team sheet. However, one can’t ignore his habit of indulging in controversies.
Toney missed the majority of the 2023-24 season due to a ban imposed by the FA for breaching player betting rules. He appeared in 17 games, netting four goals and providing two assists. He averaged 2.6 shots, 0.7 key passes, and 0.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The English international is a tough striker to handle due to his physical strength. He is clinical around the penalty area and often drops down to get involved in link-up plays. With aerial dominance and great shooting abilities, he is always a threat for the opponents.
Manchester United need Ivan Toney’s experience
Manchester United’s interest in Ivan Toney is understandable as they lack an experienced striker. They have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee at their disposal. But while the former suffered an injury during a pre-season game and will sidelined for more than a month, the latter is new and might need time to adapt.
Hence, the Red Devils want to acquire a fresh striker to secure the position better. Talking about Toney, his addition will surely add quality and depth to the offensive line. As he is an experienced striker, he can make an instant impact and his presence will also help other young forwards.
As the 28-year-old has 12 months left on his contract, Brentford are ready to sell him at a cheaper price. Manchester United can take advantage of the situation and can sign him to strengthen the unit further.
