In a recent report, TuttoAtalanta revealed that Aston Villa are facing stiff competition for Stade Rennais full-back Lorenz Assignon. It is understood that the Villans would have to rival Atalanta in the race to recruit the French defender.
Assignon’s Impressive Loan Spell At Turf Moor
Assignon had a decent loan spell at Burnley last season when he put in a few eye-catching displays for them on the right flank. The French talent participated in 15 matches for the English outfit in the previous campaign, scoring one goal and grabbing a couple of assists in multiple competitions.
The Grasse-born talent proved himself to be a decent contributor on the right wing and did well to average 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 2.7 clearances, 0.9 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He even distributed the ball relatively well after making 75.6% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Stade Rennais will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, it won’t be easy for the Villans to get a deal done for Assignon on the cheap later this year.
Aston Villa Are Facing Stiff Competition For Assignon: Is He Worth The Fight?
Assignon is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third.
The French sensation is a decent dribbler with the ball as well. However, he has to find a way to add more goals and assists to his game in the coming seasons. Assignon is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at Villa Park.
At 24, the French full-back will only get better with each year. Therefore, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery would be wise to bring him to Villa Park in this summer transfer window. Assignon has already got some Premier League experience under his belt and would help the West Midlands club compete across all fronts in the future.
All in all, Assignon would be well worth the fight, so Emery would be wise to step up his efforts to land him this summer.
