Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke offered an update on the future of Manchester City keeper Ederson. It has been claimed that the Mancunian club could let the Brazilian keeper leave amid interest from Saudi Arabia this summer but are set to demand a big fee for his services.
Ederson’s Impressive Form In The Premier League Last Season
Ederson had another impressive season at Man City as he helped them win the Premier League title. The Brazilian custodian made 43 appearances for the Mancunian giants in the previous campaign, conceding 34 goals and earning 16 clean sheets in multiple competitions.
The experienced keeper deserves some credit for averaging 0.5 clearances and 5.6 long balls per game in Premier League football. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 85.9% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Ederson is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2026. Therefore, Pep Guardiola will be under no pressure to cash in on him unless he receives a favourable offer for his services this off-season.
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Cash In On Ederson?
Ederson is an experienced keeper who can use his quick reflexes to make a few solid saves at the back. He is usually excellent when distributing the ball from inside his half and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when being chased down by the opposition attackers.
However, at 30, Ederson is slowly entering the final stage of his playing career. At the moment, he remains an important member of Pep Guardiola’s squad. However, the recent emergence of Stefan Ortega could give Man City a chance to cash in on Ederson if they receive a big offer for him in this summer transfer period.
The Mancunian club can use the money generated from the Brazilian keeper’s potential sale to bring in a suitable replacement before the start of the new campaign. Another option for Man City would be to keep hold of Ederson for another year and assess his future at the end of next season. Either way, Guardiola has got enough quality in his squad to cope with the Brazilian’s exit in the future.
