If a recent report from BBC Sport is believed to be true, Celtic have renewed their interest in Hugo Bueno. Despite failing to bring him in earlier this year during the winter window, the Glasgow giants are back again for the Wolves star in an attempt to secure his services north of the border on a season-long loan.
The Spain U21 international progressed through the academy ranks of CD Areosa before joining Wolves’ youth setup five years ago. He eventually broke into their senior side early into the 2022-23 season and featured 49 times in all competitions over the past two campaigns.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Spaniard has mostly spent his time as the understudy to Rayan Ait-Nouri at Molineux. Gaffer Gary O’Neil prefers the Algeria international as his first-choice left fullback, and Bueno, in the hunt for regular gametime, should opt for a move to Scotland before next month’s deadline.
The youngster has travelled with the Wolves squad for their pre-season tour in the United States. Celtic, too, are in the States for their preparations before next weekend’s Premiership opener against Kilmarnock. However, Bueno’s future is yet to be decided with no agreement in place between these two sides.
Why Celtic Should Step Up The Chase
The arrival of Greg Taylor restored balance and consistency down the left following Kieran Tierney’s exit. The Scotsman has been a regular in recent years, but the Hoops have failed to find a stable alternative despite roping in Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus for €4.35m two years back.
Having made only 28 appearances during his Parkhead tenure, the 23-year-old Argentine was eventually loaned out to Internacional in March for the remainder of the calendar year. He does not seem to be in Brendan Rodgers’ plans and the champions of Scotland are now chasing Bueno to bolster the left-back spot.
Although the majority of his Wolves outings have been as a substitute, the Algerian looked impressive with his dribbling, overlapping runs, crosses, cut insides and smart one-twos in and around the attacking third. He has some defensive shortcomings, but the aggression and flair of his game suit the traits of a modern-day fullback.
Celtic have only strengthened the last line of defence by tying down Kasper Schmeichel as Joe Hart’s like-for-like replacement. Benjamin Siegrist, the other custodian, has left for Rapid București, but the arrival of Viljami Sinisalo has restored parity between the sticks. They have parted ways with an array of fringe stars and the remaining weeks would only get busier with an array of key incomings and departures.
