In a recent print edition, La Gazzetta dello Sport (22 July, Page 11) stated that Real Madrid are in the running to sign German defender Mats Hummels, who is a free agent at the moment, this summer. It has been revealed that Los Blancos would have to rival Bologna in the race to land the experienced centre-back this off-season.
Hummels’ Decent Run Of Form In German Football Last Season
The 35-year-old had a solid campaign at his last club, Borussia Dortmund as he put in a run of impressive displays at the centre of their defence. Hummels participated in 40 matches for the German outfit last season, netting four goals and earning one assist across various competitions.
The German talent was a rock at the back for Dortmund based on his average of 2.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He was even been tidy when distributing the ball from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 89.3% in the German top flight (stats via whoscored).
Hummels is a free agent right now which makes him an affordable option for Real Madrid to consider this summer.
Should Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti Recruit Hummels This Summer?
Hummels loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot. Standing at 1.91m, Hummels can be a strong presence in the air for his team.
The German sensation is a tidy passer of the ball as well. However, at 35, Hummels is a player on the decline. Hence, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti should only consider recruiting him if he is planning to boost his defence for the short-term.
Another option for Los Blancos would be to invest some money to recruit a proven centre-half this summer. Still, there is no denying that Hummels can be a dominant defender on his day. He would undeniably increase competition for places within Ancelotti’s squad. Thus, Real Madrid should focus on signing him on a short-term deal this off-season.
