In a recent tweet, journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Newcastle United are showing interest in Bayern Munich ace Serge Gnabry. However, it is understood that the German winger doesn’t want to leave the Bavarian giants despite interest from the Magpies this summer.
Gnabry’s Growing Frustrations In German Football Last Season
Gnabry experienced an injury-ravaged campaign at the Allianz Arena as he missed a lot of games for the German club in Bundesliga. The 29-year-old featured in 20 matches for the Bavarian outfit last season, netting five goals and picking up a couple of assists across all competitions.
The German talent caught the eye at times in the opponent’s half based on his average of 1.7 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in Bundesliga football. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball after making 87.3% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Bayern Munich will expire in the summer of 2026. Hence, the Magpies would have to make a big offer if they are to stand a chance of landing Gnabry this off-season.
Is Gnabry A Good Fit For Newcastle United?
Gnabry is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet when he is playing with confidence on the field. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and can even strike the ball with power from long range.
Gnabry is primarily a right-winger but can also function as a left-sided wide player or as a striker if needed. However, the German sensation has to find a way to overcome his recent injury concerns if he wants to prove his worth as a consistent performer at the highest level.
Gnabry would add more pace and firepower to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s first XI. He is good enough to compete for regular first-team football at the Tyneside club next season.
At 29, Gnabry still has a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he would be a good fit for Newcastle‘s needs at the moment. However, the Magpies might struggle to get a deal done for Gnabry if he doesn’t have his heart set on a move to St. James’ Park in this summer transfer period.
