According to Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze, Liverpool are interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan in the summer transfer window. He also mentioned that the English outfit haven’t offered or started negotiations yet.
The story of Mohamed Simakan
Mohamed Simakan started his career at Strasbourg. After spending three years there, he moved to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, making progress and establishing himself as a reliable player.
Simakan is an integral part of the side already. He featured in 42 games this season, finding the back of the net thrice and providing four assists. He averaged 1.5 tackles, 1 interception, and 2.3 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The French defender mainly plays as a centre-back but also adapts well to the right-back position. He is a two-footed player with excellent passing and distributing abilities. He remains calm under pressure and uses his physical strength to shield the ball and win aerial duels.
Mohamed Simakan is a possible target
Liverpool, who fell short of winning the Premier League title last season, are looking to add more quality and depth to their unit. One of the areas they need to bolster is the backline. Especially after the departure of Joel Matip, they need a recruitment.
Having said that, the alleged interest in Mohamed Simakan is no surprise. The player has already been hitting the ground in the Bundesliga. He is two-footed and can be in several positions in the lineup, adding versatility to the unit.
The 24-year-old is expected to be available for €40m-€45m and can serve at Anfield for many years to come. The Reds have also been linked to Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, who had a great Euro Cup 2024. However, the club aren’t willing to pay around £65m to lure away him in the summer.
Hence, the signing of Simakan seems more logical and practical at the moment. One can expect an offer from Liverpool in the coming weeks.
