In a recent print edition, Sport Bild (15 July, Page 14) claimed that Arsenal are showing interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen this summer. It has been stated that the Gunners have identified the Dutch talent as a target for this transfer window.
Malen’s Decent Season In German Football
Malen had a good campaign at the German club as he put in a string of impressive displays for them on the right flank. The Netherlands international scored 15 goals and picked up five assists in 38 matches for Borussia Dortmund last season on all fronts.
The 25-year-old was a decent performer on the right wing and did well to average 2.7 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the wide areas based on his pass success rate of 79.6% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Signal Iduna Park will expire in the summer of 2026 which could make it tough for the Gunners to snap him up on the cheap in this transfer period.
What Will Malen Bring To Arsenal?
Malen is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range and has got the eye to set up a few inviting chances for his teammates up top.
The Dutch talent can contribute by scoring and creating a handful of goals for his team in the final third. However, he might need some time to adjust to life in the Premier League if the Gunners manage to bring him on board this summer.
We can expect Malen to bring more firepower to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s frontline. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Emirates Stadium next season.
At 25, Malen has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good option for the North London club to pursue this summer. Arteta would have to be patient with the player before he can unlock the best out of him at Arsenal in the coming years.
