In a recent report, The Sun stated that Real Madrid are set to rival Manchester City for Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton. It has been mentioned that Los Blancos are showing interest in recruiting the English midfielder this summer.
Wharton’s Impressive Loan Spell At Blackburn
Wharton had a decent loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last season when he managed to catch the eye at times for them in the middle of the park. The 20-year-old scored two goals and picked up three assists in 26 appearances for the English outfit in the previous campaign in the EFL Championship.
The English talent was a decent performer at both ends of the pitch as he averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.8 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after making 84.6% of his attempted passes in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Crystal Palace will expire in the summer of 2029. Thus, it won’t be easy for Real Madrid to sign him on a cut-price deal this off-season.
Is Wharton A Decent Option For Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti?
Wharton is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed and can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range. The English talent has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet.
At the moment, Wharton is enjoying his football in England. Hence, Real Madrid would do well to lure him to the Spanish capital in this summer transfer window. At 20, Wharton has the potential to be a future star at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
The talented youngster would also serve as an ideal replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement from playing football recently, at the Madrid club. Hence, Carlo Ancelotti should focus on going all out to get Wharton on board before the end of this transfer window. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Spain.
