In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano mentioned that Barcelona have identified Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as their top target. It is believed that the Catalan club are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Spanish wide player this summer.
Williams’ Impressive Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Williams managed to prove his worth as a consistent performer for Athletic Bilbao in the previous campaign when he put in a string of productive displays on the left side of their attack. The 22-year-old registered eight goals and grabbed 19 assists in 37 appearances for the Spanish outfit last season on all fronts.
The Spain international gave a good account of himself on the offensive end of the field based on his average of 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after making 79.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will run out in the summer of 2027. Furthermore, his stock has risen significantly after he helped Spain win the UEFA Euro 2024 recently. Thus, Barcelona would have to pay a big fee if they are serious about signing Williams this summer.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Get Williams On Board?
Williams can use his quickness to get in behind the opponent’s backline at every chance he gets. He is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to engineer some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third.
The Spain international is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger if asked to do so. He can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals for his team from the wide areas.
We can expect Williams to bring more firepower to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s attack. He has what it takes to secure a regular first-team spot at the Catalan club in the coming seasons.
At 22, Williams has the potential to be a generational talent in the future. Therefore, Barca would be wise to get him on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
