In a recent report, De Telegraaf stated that West Ham United are showing interest in Ajax speedster Steven Bergwijn. It has been stated that the Hammers are eager to secure the services of the Dutch talent this summer.
Bergwijn’s Impressive Form In Dutch Football
Bergwijn experienced a decent campaign at the Dutch club as he was responsible for producing a series of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The 26-year-old played in 31 matches for Ajax last season, scoring 13 times and picking up five assists in multiple competitions.
The Amsterdam-born sensation was a reliable performer in the opponent’s half based on his average of 2.8 shots, 2.1 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game in the Dutch Eredivisie. He was even been tidy when distributing the ball in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.1% in the Dutch top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Dutch club will expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, it would be difficult for West Ham to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.
Should West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui Snap Bergwijn Up?
Bergwijn is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to make some decent plays for others around him and can use his pace to get in behind the opponent’s backline.
The Dutch talent is primarily a left-winger but can also operate as an attacking midfielder or as a centre-forward if asked to do so. He would bring more pace and firepower to West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui’s frontline.
At 26, Bergwijn is about to enter his prime which makes him a decent option for the Hammers to consider in the summer. He is good enough to help the East London club challenge across all fronts in the coming years.
With all things considered, Lopetegui should focus on trying everything in his power to snap Bergwijn up this summer. He already knows the Premier League well from his time at Tottenham Hotspur and won’t take much time to settle into life at the London Stadium if West Ham manage to bring him on board before the end of this transfer window.
